1955 Topps Sandy Koufax Rookie
His very first card, from the summer a 19-year-old kid sat mostly on a big-league bench.
Koufax was a bonus baby in 1955, and the rule that came with the money meant Brooklyn had to keep him on the major-league roster instead of sending him down to learn. He barely pitched until August 27, when he shut out Cincinnati on two hits and struck out 14 at Ebbets Field for his first win. The Dodgers won the World Series that fall and he never threw a pitch in it.

Yaz on cardboard the year he carried a whole city on his back.
In 1967 Yastrzemski won the Triple Crown, hitting .326 with 44 home runs and 121 RBIs, and took the MVP along with it. The Red Sox had finished ninth the year before and won the pennant on the final day of the season. In the last two games against Minnesota, with everything riding on them, Yaz went 7-for-8 with six runs batted in.

Reggie's rookie card, on shelves while he was chasing the home run record.
Jackson had 30 home runs through Oakland's first 71 games of 1969 and was running ahead of Roger Maris's record pace by the Fourth of July. August went cold on him, and a hospital stay for a skin rash took most of September. He finished with a career-high 47 homers and led the American League with 123 runs scored.

Those bright '75 borders, from the year Ryan pulled even with Koufax.
On June 1, 1975, Ryan no-hit the Orioles 1-0 in Anaheim for the fourth no-hitter of his career, tying Sandy Koufax's record. He was pitching on an elbow full of bone chips the whole while. After one last outing against the Yankees in late August he shut it down, and had surgery on September 23 to take four chips out.
